Historical NoteReturn to Top

Loran Olsen is a teacher, author, musician, and ethnomusicologist. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Music and Native American Studies at Washington State University (WSU). His research focuses on the music and dance of indigenous communities in the US. He has taught classes at WSU, Walla Walla College, University of Colorado, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Inner Mongolia Normal University, and the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. In 2003, he was inducted into the Washington State Music Teachers Association's "Hall of Fame".

Harriette Shelton Dover (1904-1991) was a tribal leader, storyteller, and advocate from the Tulalip reservation located in Washington State. She was the daughter of Chief William Shelton, who was a well-known totem pole carver. As a child, Harriette was forced to endure brutal conditions at the Tulalip Indian School along with approximately 225 other students. She grew up to be the first woman chairperson of the Tulalip Tribes Board of Directors and was responsible for reviving the First Salmon Ceremony. She also convinced the Marysville Public School District to build a new school on the reservation and served as the school's first PTA president.
