Historical NoteReturn to Top

Denise Lynn Bittner (nee Alexander) was born in Yakima, Washington in 1950 to James and Dorothy Bittner. The family moved to Boise, Idaho in 1955; Denise graduated from Borah High School in Boise in 1968. Between 1968 and 1972, Denise attended the University of Oregon, where she majored in Broadcasting in the School of Journalism. As an undergraduate, she served as the President of both Sigma Delta Chi, a national journalism society, and Theta Sigma Phi, a national women's journalism organization. After graduation, Denise worked for KTUB TV in Boise.

In 1973, she married John Robert Bittner, a professor of Journalism at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After his death in 2002, she retired from her job as Assistant Dean for Institutional Advancement of the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina, and moved back to Boise.

The collection is comprised of correspondence (1971-1972), printed material (issues of the Kappa Alpha Theta Magazine, 1969-1971; issues of Kat-Tales, the Kappa Alpha Theta alumnae newsletter), ephemera (event programs, dining and housing information, Kappa Alpha Theta pledge lists, songs, and rituals, and the Panhellenic Handbook), and newsclippings.
