Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Richard Alden received his undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Washington, his masters from Yale University and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. He began teaching architecture at the University of Washington in 1961, specializing in the areas of design process, personal environmental relations, and photography. Professor Alden died in Seattle in 1992, at the age of 62.

Scope and Content: Biographical features, report, photographs, proofs, negatives, slides, project sketches, questionnaires, sound cassette tapes, reel-to-reel sound recording, transcripts of interviews, publications, clippings; 1964-1990. Bulk of papers document Professor Alden's 1986 and 1990 Tokyo streetscape studies which were particularly concerned with learning how the visual characteristics of a city affect urban behavior. Included are questionnaires in Japanese completed by respondents who were in their early 20s or in their 60s and 70s.

Scope and Content: Photographs, slides, proofs, negatives, film, project sketches, questionnaires, writings, notebooks; 1986-ca 1990. Papers are part of Professor Alden's 1986 and 1990 Tokyo streetscape studies which were particularly concerned with learning how the visual characteristics of a city affect urban behavior. Included are completed questionnaires in Japanese.

Alden's photographic studies of Seattle streetscapes are also included.
