Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Frank G. Mitchell worked as a newsman, publisher, and general manager of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, a local Walla Walla newspaper. He began in the Walla Walla newspaper business in 1910, when the paper was known as the Walla Walla Bulletin. Mitchell served in the military in 1918, but returned to the paper in 1919 to act as advertising manager. In 1932, when the Walla Walla Bulletin and Walla Walla Union combined, Mitchell was appointed as general manager. He was named vice president in 1955. Mitchell was publisher of the paper from 1957 to 1963. He continued his work at the Union-Bulletin through its sale to the Seattle Times in 1971. He then continued working as an advertising salesman until 1979. Mitchell was nearly eighty eight when he retired, and died in 1986 at the age of ninety five.

The Frank Mitchell Papers contain photographs and material from his career at the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, as well as his family life. These papers, which date from 1910 through 1979, also consists of newspaper clippings and advertisements related to or created by Mitchell are alongside photographs of business events at the newspaper. The collection also includes financial documents and business correspondence, as well as personal correspondence from Mitchell and his wife. Mitchell's official military paperwork and his certificate of honorable discharge are also included.
