Biographical NoteReturn to Top

William L. Phillips (d. 1990) was a long-time dean in the UW College of Arts and Sciences and was a member of the UW English Department faculty for 40 years. He came to UW in 1949, after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. In 1956, he accepted his first administrative position as coordinator of the first International Congress on Theoretical Physics. After this, he served UW in both teaching and administrative capacities for both science and the humanities. He also served on committees and as an officer for many professional organizations, including the MLA, the Danforth Foundation, and the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools. His scholarly interests focussed on American literature, particularly the work of Theodore Dreiser and Sherwood Anderson.

Scope and Content: Correspondence, reports, newsletters, publications, and other materials (largely 1965-1989) documenting William L. Phillips's career at the University of Washington on the English Dept. faculty and in administrative capacities, especially as a dean in the School of Arts and Sciences. Included are materials on higher education accreditation, curriculum design, faculty composition and compensation, teacher education, and campus ministries. There are also materials relating directly to Phillips's campus activities in the English and American Studies departments and in the School of Arts and Sciences, including many files on the University and Faculty Senates.

Phillips's work with various organizations is also documented. They include the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and its member schools, the Modern Language Association, the American Studies Association, the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature, the Pacific Northwest Conference on Higher Education, the Council on Ministries in Higher Education, the Danforth Foundation, and the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools.
