Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Jo Anne Russell (ne: Wingfield) was born in 1932. After graduating from Boise Senior High School in 1950, Russell worked as a real estate agent, a biofeedback technician at an alcohol rehabilitation hospital, and a counselor. Russell entered Boise State University as a freshman in 1984 majoring in communications, continuing her education with a master's program in history that culminated in her thesis, "A Necessary Evil: Prostitutes, Patriarchs, and Profits in Boise City, 1863-1915." Russell entered the PhD program in Adult Education at the University of Idaho in 1990. She earned 36 credits, but did not complete the program. She was the Women's Center Programming Coordinator at Boise State from 1993 to 1995. Jo Anne Russell died in 2000.

The series contains research for Russell's master's thesis, "A Necessary Evil: Prostitutes, Patriarchs, and Profits in Boise City, 1863-1915." This includes lecture notes, articles, government reports, census data, maps of Boise, court and property records, photographs, and workshop notes containing student and public opinions on the content of Russell's thesis. There is also research for her undergraduate thesis about the history of feminine hygiene products, which includes advertisements, magazines, photos, and notes.
