Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Photographs and various ephemeral materials relating to David L. Bonsteel's interest in photogrammetry, a data gathering tool described as "an effort to document by accurate recording of architectural form the historically important buildings which may not be saved due to rapid urban rebuilding.". The majority of the data and photographs relate to the Burke Building built between 1889 and 1891 by Elmer Fisher. This building was restored and altered in the 1940s for the Federal Government, destroyed in the 1970s, and replaced by the new Federal Building. Other photogrammetry projects include the Union Gospel Mission Cafe and the Rothschild house. Bonsteel produced two written documents as a result of his interest and research: a technical report entitled "Photogrammetry as a data-gathering tool for documentation of historically significant building form in the Pacific Northwest" (Jan. 1971); and a proposal for an urban renewal grant project entitled "People and downtown: use, attitudes, settings." Many of the additional photographs are related to the grant project and depict downtown Seattle scenes, late 1960s.
