Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Paul E. Fields was a research fisheries psychologist and professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington from 1953 until his retirement in 1975. He conducted research into animal behavior, particularly the migration of salmon. He frequently taught introductory courses for undergraduates, adopting innovative approaches designed to help students who were struggling with the material. He also developed the "Fields Teaching Tests" in the 1970s.

Fields traveled extensively in the Northwest, as well as to many destinations in North America and overseas, all of which allowed him to pursue his hobby of photography. After his retirement, he founded the Mary and Paul E. Fields endowed research fund for teaching excellence. He remained actively involved in the Psychology Department, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University until his death at the age of 93 on September 6, 1998.
