Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Jacob Samuel (J.S.) Friedman grew up in Seattle after emigrating from Russia with his parents and siblings. As a young man he learned the mercantile business by selling clothing. He opened his own store and called it King’s at Fourth and Pike, which carried men’s suits. In the 1930s he sold the store and opened another one on First and Columbia that sold workmen’s clothing. Close to Pioneer Square and the waterfront, he appealed to the appropriate clientele.

After World War II he opened the Army-Navy Surplus Store at Second and Seneca. J.S. hired men from the Jewish community to work in his stores and mentored them in the business.

Barbara Droker is J.S. Friedman's granddaughter.
