Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Harold F. Schiffman (1938-) is an anthropologist, author, and teacher from the United States. He earned his BA in German and French from Antioch College in 1960, his MA in Slavic and Dravidian Linguistics in 1966 from the University of Chicago, and his PhD in Dravidian Linguistics in 1969 from the University of Chicago. He has taught at various universities including the University of Washington, the University of California, and the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include sociolinguistics and the intersection with language policy and politics.

Original recorded on Uher (model not identified) by Harold F. Schiffman (Asian Languages and Literature, UW).
Contents: side 1 (recorded @ 7 1/2 ips) contains American rock music (with 1 Indian example) record dubs; side 2 (recorded @ 3 3/4 ips) contains Indian material as follows, (titles from collector): 1) Trance, 2) Song dance: Oh Ho Ho; 3 syllable with group redupl., 3) Women singing, 4) Toda numerals, 5) Thatching ceremony, 6) More women singing (Toda), 7) Sangam material, 8) Kota songs.
Source info from collector: "The Toda material was recorded at (near) a Toda settlement near Lovedale station (on the Nilgiri Blue railroad line.) The Kota material was recorded at Kotagiri in the Nilgiris. The Tamil 'Sangam' material was recorded in Annamalainagar. Dates: all done in 1965-66. Copied material [which portion of tape?] from Dr. Gerard Diffloth, now at U. of Chicago."
