Biographical NoteReturn to Top

James Townsend received his M.A. in International Relations in 1957 and his Ph.D. in Political Science in 1965 from the University of California at Berkeley. Townsend served as a visiting lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (1966-1967) and assistant professor at Berkeley (1964-1968) before he arrived at the University of Washington in 1968. He taught at the Institute for Comparative and Foreign Area Studies as an associate professor of Political Studies between 1968 and 1974 and served as associate director for China and Inner Asia at the Institute from 1972 to 1975. Townsend also taught courses as a professor of Political Science and East Asian Studies (1974-1992) and guided a large number of doctoral students through their dissertation research and writing, serving on a number of dissertation committees. He also published a number of handbooks, textbooks, and articles in the field of nationalism in China and served on a number of national and international editorial boards and committees. He retired from his post as a professor of Political Science and East Asian Studies in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington in 1992 to battle cancer. James Townsend died on January 17, 2004.
