Louis P. Hopkins was the division superintendent of the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, and came to California in 1906. His career is described in his autobiography, "A Lifetime of Railroading."

The collection (1910-1955) contains his autobiography, "A Lifetime of Railroading," and mementos including photographs of the construction of Tunnel No. 10 on the line between Santa Margarite and San Luis Obispo, California, a press book of the Southern Pacific train, "Shasta Daylight," and other railroad photographs.
