Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of pediatrics, University of Washington; hospital administrator and legislative lobbyist (ca 1930- ). A native of Seattle, Bergman received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1958. He joined the University of Washington School of Medicine faculty in 1964. In addition to his teaching appointment, he has held various administrative positions both at the University and at related medical facilites, including director of Pediatrics at Harborview Medical Center. Bergman has also been involved in legislative lobbying efforts on behalf of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act and the National Health Service Corps, among other initiatives.

Scope and Content: Correspondence, writings, legislation, reports, and related materials mainly concerning his lobbying for a national health service corps (ca. 1970-1974) and for Indian health care legislation and Indian health programs (ca. 1974-1985). Also includes outgoing correspondence (1981) and clippings and published articles about Dr. Bergman's activities.

Scope and Content: Correspondence, writings, conference presentations, Congressional testimony, media files and subject series which include pediatric health issues and political campaigns of others; 1966-1982. The papers document Dr. Bergman's activism on a variety of medical issues, particularly his work on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

There is also a signifcant body of papers which were created by Bergman's participation in several politcal campaigns and his continuing contacts with the offices of Senators Warren G. Magnuson and Henry M. Jackson.

Also includes files from Bergman's involvment with the Children's Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center and Odessa Brown Children's Clinic
