Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, University of Washington Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Department.

Thomas Hall Holmes was born 1918. Holmes came to the University of Washington in 1949. He is most well known for the development of the Schedule of Recent Experiences and for his Live Change Events research which was first published in 1967. His work on Life Change Events was known internationally and became known to the general public through inclusion in Alvin Toffler's book Future Shock and a Time Magazine article. He continued in that field until his retirement in 1984 after a stroke. He worked on committees of the University of Washington School of Medicine and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Correspondence, speeches, writings, conference and convention files, awards, and grant files, relating to Hall's research interests, and especially life change events; together with committee files relating to University of Washington School of Medicine and Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, 1949-1984. Correspondents include Alvin Toffler. 3.5 linear feet of the material received consisted of correspondence regarding Life Change research. Much of this was requests for reprints, requests for permission to use material in research, and personal statements regarding individual applications of the Life Change Scale. The vast majority of this material was discarded. A sampling was kept, which represents typical responses to inquiries, or in which Holmes responded at greater length than usual, shedding light on his interpretation of his research.

The grant records included here are proposals, renewals and some reports. Dr. Holmes was principle investigator for the majority. A lesser number were grants to other Psychiatry Department professors including Dr. Minoru Masuda and Dr. Herbert Ripley. No attempt has been made to place these in any particular order. The subgroups represent only a few of the many W.U. Medicine School Committees on which Dr. Holmes served.
