Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Carlos Sampayan Bulosan (c. 1911- September 11, 1956) was a Filipino American author, poet, and activist. A chronicler of the Filipino American experience in during the 1930s-early 1950s on the West Coast, he is best remembered for his semi-fictionalized autobiographical novel America Is In the Heart (1946). Though Bulosan was only 42-45 years old when he died of tuberculosis-complicated pneumonia in Seattle in 1956, he left behind a large body of poems, novels, short stories, plays, and correspondence on a wide range of interrelated topics. Bulosan’s work described the experience of growing up poor in a rural area of the Philippines, chronicling the conditions of neocolonialism after American occupation and centuries of Spanish colonialism. Bulosan’s work captures the “push” factors that drove himself his generation to the United States. Like Bulosan, they hoped to find a better future and forged resilient and adaptive communities in the face of an often-hostile and exploitative European American culture in the United States. Bulosan is remembered as a progressive anti-colonial, pro-labor, humanitarian voice by an array of communities including Asian/Pacific Islanders, organized labor, academics and intellectuals, and a wide array of social justice; ethnic; and activist communities.

Microfilm collection
Processing Info: With the following exceptions, all the material on microfilm is copied from originals in the Bulosan Papers: Microfilm reel no. 3 was copied from a Manila Public Schools textbook, Philippine Prose and Poetry; reel no. 4 material was copied from original manuscripts held by the University of Chicago Library; reel no. 5 was copied from material originally owned by Josephine Patrick. Patrick had also loaned the originals contained on reel no. 6 in September 1977. She then donated the originals in November 1977. The letters addressed to Josephine Patrick (1953-1955, undated) on reel no. 8 were returned to Patrick after filming.

Accession No. 0581-013: Sound recordings about Carlos Bulosan, 1959-1960Return to Top

2 sound cassettes (60 min. ea.)
2 CD-ROM discs

Scope and Content: Contains sound cassette and CD-ROM copies of recordings of individuals reminiscing about their friendship with Carlos Bulosan. The originals are reel-to-reel sound recordings (1959-1960) in Accession No. 0581-012.

In the Chris Mensalvas interview conducted by Joseph Butterworth on September 19, 1959, Mensalvas stated his belief that Bulosan came to the United States in 1931 and landed in Seattle. He may have stayed in Seattle for a time but then went to Yakima to pick fruit. He wound up in Lompoc, California, where Mensalvas thinks they first met. When Carlos was unemployed, he lived with Mensalvas, as did Aurelio, Carlos's brother. This housing consisted of a two bedroom apartment with a kitchen, shared by four men.

Jo Patrick, Barry Hatten and Red Gibb recall Carlos Bulosan's later years in an interview recorded at Mary Gibson's apartment on June 19, 1960.
