Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Golden Z's was service organization established for young women entering the business profession. The Boise State group was the first junior college level chapter to be established by the parent organization, Zonta International. Established on campus in 1957, the college members allied themselves with executive and influential women of the community for civic and social projects. At that time, Dr. Chaffee spoke of his hope that the girls would develop their ability to work together in community service during school and beyond. By 1972, the organization's purpose became to promote ethical standards in business and to improve the legal, political and professional status of women.
Moneys from the "Z's" fund raisers (bake sales, fashion shows, and concerts) were used for scholarships, local charities and contributions to the international organization's "World University" which aided victims of disasters. Among other events, the group collected funds for Easter Seals, food for the needy during Thanksgiving, and clothing and toys for an adopted family each Christmas. The group sponsored the Miss BSU pageant, ushered for campus events, and checked coats for Governor's Inaugural Ball.
