Christopher Lynn "Kit" Bakke (1946-). Activist.

Kit Bakke was born and raised near Seattle, Washington and graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a political science degree in 1968. While at Bryn Mawr, she founded a Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) chapter. After graduating she went on to work in the print shop of the SDS national office. After participating in a trip to Cuba in 1969 to meet with North and South Vietnamese, Bakke and her trip comrades decided to escalate tactics and strategies beyond mass demonstrations. At a quarterly SDS meeting in Flint, Michigan, she and her comrades split from the organization to form the Revolutionary Youth Movement, which later became known as the Weather Underground Organization (WUO). Bakke participated in WUO's antiwar, antiracist, and anti-capitalist efforts from its inception in 1969 and went underground until 1973. She also has two bachelor's degrees in nursing from the University of Rochester and two master's degrees in nursing and public health from the University of Washington. For thirteen years, Bakke worked as an oncology nurse at Children's Regional Hospital in Seattle. In her retirement, she writes and volunteers in local philanthropic organizations including charities that tackle drug abuse and homelessness.

Scope and Content: This collection includes materials related to Kit Bakke's research and writing of her book Protest on Trial: The Seattle 7 Conspiracy including interview transcripts, manuscript drafts, notes, correspondence, and clippings. The book, published in 2018, follows the Seattle 7 federal conspiracy trial of antiwar leaders in 1970. In January 1970, Michael Lerner, one of the Seattle 7 and then-UW visiting philosophy professor, founded the Seattle Liberation Front (SLF) with members who joined after the recent disbanding of SDS and other radical organizations. Months after a February 17, 1970 protest at Seattle’s downtown federal building turned violent, a Federal Grand Jury in Seattle indicted eight people for conspiracy to cause damage to federal property and intent to riot: Susan Stern, Roger Lippman, Joe Kelly, Jeff Dowd, Michael Lerner, Chip Marshall, Mike Abeles, and Michael Justesen. Justesen, however, went underground in early 1970 before the trial began. The remaining seven people came to be known as the Seattle 7. The book follows the defendants to prison, their fight to be released, and how they have lived their lives over the almost fifty years since then. Protest then and now is explored in the Epilogue. Protest on Trial is based on interviews with defendants, attorneys, FBI agents, police, supporters, eyewitnesses, and more.
