Biographical NoteReturn to Top

George A. Sense attended Oregon State College for one academic year in 1930-1931 studying civil engineering.  He was a member of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity, but lived with other students in a Corvallis boarding house.  Sense played on the freshman football team.

George Andrew Sense was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on August 27, 1910, and grew up in Berkeley, California. He returned to Berkeley after one year at Oregon State because of the Depression.  He subsequently attended the University of California and served in World War II.  Sense lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico, for several years before his death.  He died in El Paso, Texas on November 14, 1978.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The George A. Sense Photographs consist of images created, assembled, and annotated by Sense to document his experience as a student at Oregon State College (OSC) in 1930-1931.  The collection includes snapshots of Sense and his roommates, friends, and other football players; the Rook Bonfire; campus buildings and the OSC President's home on campus; the Marys River "swimming hole" and Brook Lane in Corvallis; the First Methodist Church across from lower campus; and the boarding house where Sense lived -- identified as the home of Mrs. Alvin Ball at 2019 Van Buren.  A formal professional photograph of the freshman football team is also included.

Of special note in the collection are unique, candid images of the assembly of materials, construction, and oversight of the bonfire built by the freshmen ("rook") students for homecoming in the fall of 1930.  The photographs of Sense's fellow students include football players Henry Hughes, from Hawaii, and Coquelle Thompson, from Siletz, Oregon.

The images were identified and dated by Sense.

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.
