Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Benella Caminiti was a Seattle environmentalist. She was a board member of the Washington Environmental Council, and long-time chair of its Coast and Shorelines Committee, which opposed the establishment of a U.S. Navy homeport at Everett, Washington. Caminiti was born in 1922 in Colorado. After moving to Washington State with her husband and children, she went to work at the University of Washington’s Regional Primate Research Center, where she retired as manager in 1988.

One of the early issues that caught Caminiti's attention was the Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. She served on the board of Save Woodland Park from 1972 through 1974. She also fought legal battles to preserve local parks and shorelines from development to ensure their continued access and enjoyment by the public. She was a long-time member of the League of Women Voters and helped found the Seattle Shorelines Coalition. She volunteered for, and donated financially to, The Center for Environmental Law & Policy (CELP). In 1991, she received an award from the Washington State Department of Ecology. In 2004, she received the Ralph W. Johnson Award from 'CELP' for her lifetime of activism protecting public lands and waters for all people. She died on November 25, 2007 in the city of Lake Stevens, Washington.
