Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Alexander Milton Wade was born in West Virginia on July 1, 1872 and moved to western Washington with his family at a young age. A deaf mute as were other children in the family, he attended the school for deaf in Vancouver, Washington. At that time it was called the School for Defective Youth. He married Editha May Levy in Seattle in 1901. Wade died in an auto accident on October 25, 1912.

Diaries penned by Alexander Wade. The diaries begin in July 1892 when Wade was living on the family farm in the Wynoochee Valley in Grays Harbor County, Washington. They continue through his life, documenting his days in school, life on the farm, work at mills in Tacoma and Seattle; his and his deaf wife Editha's social life with family and with other deaf people, her employment, and his construction of their home in Tacoma in 1909. The diaries end in January 1912.
