Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Inland Automobile Association (IAA) Records include those of six other local, state, and regional automobile groups, as well as the national American Automobile Association (AAA). They are tied together by the activities of two men, Frank W. Guilbert and his son, David. Frank Guilbert was instrumental in founding the two main organizations which lobbied for roads in the Inland Empire - the Spokane County Good Roads Association (SCGRA) in 1903, and the Inland Automobile Association in 1912. From then until his death in 1942, Guilbert held various offices in, and was one of the controlling forces in both organizations. After Frank died, his son David took over his position, retiring in 1972 as IAA secretary. The Guilberts were also active in other automotive groups, such as the Eastern Washington Highway Association (EWHA), the National Parks Highway Association (NPHA), the Washington State Loop Highway Association (WSLHA), the Washington State Good Roads Association (WSGRA), and the Western Federation of Motor Clubs (WFMC).

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The bulk of this collection consists of the records of the IAA and the SCGRA. The remaining records are those of other automobile organizations, and reflect the participation in them by the Guilberts.

The materials include organizational papers, minutes, reports, financial records, correspondence, speeches, subject files, publications, maps, advertisements, cartoons, newsclippings, and photographs. Of particular note as a record of early travel conditions, is a collection of 137 photographs taken on the 1916 National Parks Highway Tour from Chicago to Tacoma. Frank Guilbert was a participant, and helped organize the tour. The collection also contains additional separate series of maps and publications of the American Automobile Association, as well as other organizations.

5. CORRESPONDENCE
The correspondence of the SCCGRA can be divided into two series, the president's office and the office of the secretary. During most of the period it was kept, the president, William H. Cowles, and the secretary, Frank W. Guilbert, kept their own separate files. Most of the letters received by Cowles were written by Guilbert. In 1938 (see letter from Cowles to Guilbert dated Aug. 6, 1938) Cowles transfered custody of his correspondence to Guilbert and the IAA.
