Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Charles Odegaard (1911-1999) was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois. He received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his masters and doctorate from Harvard University in 1933 and 1937 respectively. Odegaard became President of the University of Washington in 1958. Prior to his tenure at the University, he taught at the University of Illinois (1937-1948) and served as executive director of the American Council of Learned Societies (1948-1952). He also taught and held a deanship at the University of Michigan (1952-1958). In 1973 he was appointed President Emeritus. Also in that year, he joined the faculty of the College of Education as professor of higher education. He was appointed professor of biomedical history in 1975. He was granted emeritus status in both in 1981. Odegaard's professional career also included tenure as a director of Minorities in Medicine for the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation (1975-1976). He served on numerous boards and commissions including UNESCO, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Commission on Human Resources and Advanced Training which he chaired, the American Council on Education which he also chaired, and he was one of the organizers and a member of the board of directors of CAPA (Consortium for Atlantic-Pacific Affairs. Locally, he was a trustee on the boards of several Seattle institutions, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Symphony Orchestra and the Public Library.

Scrapbook includes clippings and photographs documenting the announcement and inauguration of Dr. Charles E. Odegaard as president of the University of Washington in 1958. Also includes newspaper articles detailing Odegaard's first visit to the University and his views on the athletic program, especially the football team.
