Historical NoteReturn to Top

The University of Washington Press traces its origins to 1915, when Edmond Meany's "Governors of Washington, Territorial and State" was issued. In 1920, the first book to bear the University of Washington Press imprint was released, an edition of "The Poems of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey." The Press has published approximately 3,500 titles, covering a wide variety of academic fields, with especially distinguished lists in Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies, environmental history, anthropology, Western history, natural history, marine studies, architectural history, and art. In addition, the press is recognized as the foremost publisher on art and culture of the Northwest Coast Indians and Alaskan Eskimos, as well as the leader in the publication of materials dealing with the Asian American experience.

The imprint of the University of Washington Press is under the control of a faculty committee appointed by the dean of the Graduate School. Approval of the University Press Committee is required before any book may be published and the Press's editors work closely with the faculty committee to select books that will carry the University of Washington imprint. In recent years, the Press has established co-publishing and distribution relationships with a growing list of art museums and other institutions through the world. At the same time, their staff have supported campus programs, such as the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, the Walter Chapin Simpson Center for the Humanities, and other divisions for which they publish or distribute publications. The Press has also published volumes based on the Jessie and John Danz Lecture Series in science and philosophy, the Samuel and Althea Stroum Lectures in Jewish Studies, the Emil and Kathleen Sick Lecture-Book Series in Western History and Biography, and the Earl and Edna Stice Memorial Lecture Series.

We observe the attendings as they listen to case presentations, conduct besides teaching and post-bedside discussion, and review medical charts.
