Accession No. 5038-001: Mountaineers History Committee oral history interview, 1995-1996Return to Top
Scope and Content: Two interviews with previously active members of the Mountaineers; 1995 and 1996. Activities and experiences through and because of the club are discussed. John Hossack, a well known climber, talks about weekend trips with other club members, serving as an instructor for climbing courses, winter activities such as skiing, and summer outings through the club in various places throughout the greater Northwest. One such outing involved making a first ascent on Grand Teton. Equipment in use during the 1930s and 1940s is also discussed. Margaret (Peg) and William (Bill) Stark discuss the impact the Mountaineers had on their family, especially their children. The Starks spent much of their free time exploring the Enchantment Lakes area east of Mt. Stuart in the Cascade range of Washington. Their explorations of the area provided some names to features in the area. After Bill Stark's retirement, the couple led guided trips into the mountains, although not in the Enchantment area.
