Historical NoteReturn to Top

John Fahey was a professor in the Radio and Television department at Eastern Washington University who published several book-length works on the history of the Inland Northwest.

The "Reese Affair" led to the resignation of EWCE President Freeman and some faculty members. William Reese entered the Master's program at EWCE and was listed in the Faculty listing in the catalog as possessing an MA which had not yet been granted when the 1953/54 catalog came out, causing a controversy among the faculty, and eventually a vote of "no confidence" in the administration by the students. The controversy resulted in the dismissal of some of the faculty members who had been particularly vocal in the matter, eventually most were rehired. -- Contains text from EWU website.

GROUP A: MANUSCRIPTS: THE FLATHEAD INDIANSReturn to Top

Fahey left many idea and research notes between the pages of the text. Idea notes were left as they were found, as were notes stapled to the pages which contain passages used in the text. The research notes were removed and placed with the remainder of the research materials. They were replaced by notations listing their new locations. One folder of rough introductory notes accompany the manuscript, which appear to have been used in the preparation of the preface. They outline Fahey's goals and approach to his research on the Flatheads.

1 THE FLATHEAD INDIANS
Fahey's research and idea notes were written on cards and various sized pieces of paper, many of which were filed between the pages of the manuscripts. Idea notes were left where they were found, while research notes were removed and replaced by notations showing their new locations. Other research and idea notes were originally found in boxes, often in no apparent order. Research notes are filed together in alphabetical order by author, under the same six classifications as the book's bibliography. The classifications are: manuscripts, other unpublished materials, books and pamphlets, articles, government documents, and newspapers. The remaining idea notes were grouped in alphabetical order by subject. Also included are microfilm purchased from the National Archives and Yale University, as well as footage shot by Fahey while doing research in various archives and libraries. The remaining items consist of unpublished research papers by other authors, publication book reviews, news clippings, a bibliography and bibliographic essay, and ephemera.
