Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Cle Elum Ranger Station rangers residence was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1934, the same year the Cle Elum Ranger District was established; the associated garage was built two years later. At the time of the mitigation, the residence and garage were owned by the USDA Forest Service. The residence and garage were eligible for listing on the National Register because of their association with the Depression-era CCC and as an example of the distinctive Pacific Northwest rustic architecture associated with this period.
This collection documents the historic and physical context of the Cle Elum Ranger Residence and Garage in advance of a property sale that included the land the buildings were found upon. Currently there is no listing in national or state historic building registers of these structures. It is not clear if the structures still exist or not.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Photographs of the Cle Elum Ranger Residence and Garage (taken July 30 and September 1, 2005) and 22 page HABS/HAER type documentation by USDA Forest Service archaeologist Jacqueline Beidl.
The photographs show various elevations of both buildings, and exterior details and interior views of the residence. The documentation, a Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) type document, provides historical background and an architectural description of the property, and describes its significance; it also includes a site plan and an index to the photographs.
