Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Frank Edwin Strickland was a naval engineer and marine architect. He also owned the Northlake Marina on Lake Union in Seattle. Throughout his career, Strickland designed research vessels for the University of Washington, as well as ships for the United States Navy and other vessels in the Seattle area.

Strickland's wife, Helen Darsie Strickland, was a librarian who worked as a department head at the University of Washington Libraries. They had two children, Frank and Carol. Frank Strickland died in 1974.

Standardized designs, construction plans, proposal sketches, and other profiles and plans of cruisers, dinghies, schooners, and other vessels designed by Frank Edwin Strickland for companies and individuals. Many of the plans are by Rowlands & Strickland, Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Includes plans for the motor oceanographic vessel Catalyst, which was the first oceanographic vessel on the west coast and was designed for and owned by the University of Washington. Also included are Strickland's Masonic certificates of membership and Emily Strickland's school certificates and diplomas.
