Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Doris J. Stiefel (1928-) is a Seattle dentist who was born in Aachen, Germany. She is the daughter of Richard and Gertrude Pintus. She arrived in Seattle in 1948 and entered the University of Washington Dental School in 1950. She married Ernest Stiefel on Dec. 23rd, 1950. She was director of Dental Education in Care of the Disabled at the University of Washington from 1975-1994. She was a member of the board of directors of the Caroline Kline Galland Home for the Aged in Seattle, Washington, and president of the North End Group of Hadassah in Seattle from 1966 until 1968. She also has served as president of the Washington State Jewish Historical Society.

Scope and Content: The papers of Doris J. Stiefel contain correspondence, minutes, financial records, and reports that document the administrative workings of the Caroline Kline Galland Home for the Aged. The records also document Stiefel’s participation in the Hadassah movement and Seattle area chapters of Hadassah, and include membership records, financial records, general correspondence, minutes, and publications for these organizations.

Restrictions on Use: Creator's literary rights not transferred to the University of Washington Libraries.

Acquisition Info: Donated to the University of Washington Libraries between 1987 and 2000 by Ernest R. Stiefel.

Biographical/Historical Note: Caroline Rosenberg Kline Galland devoted her considerable energy and wealth to serving the poor of Seattle and was particularly concerned with the care of the elderly and infirm. In her last will and testament of 1905, she wrote, "It is my desire that the Caroline Kline Galland Home for the Aged be so constructed and managed that it may bring to the lives of the aged men and women who shall be domiciled therein the greatest degree of contentment and happiness in their declining years."
