Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Leo Okin was born 1923 in Riga, Latvia. He came to the U.S. in 1929 and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was in the army for three years, then while working at the summer day camp for the Brooklyn YMHA was introduced to social work. He traces his interest in Jewish people and Zionism to the pride his family felt for his uncle, Rabbi Reines, the founder of Mizrachi Zionism. He attended the Columbia School of Social Work and worked with street gangs. He earned his M.A. in Social Work in 1949.
