Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The album contains approximately 300 photographs featuring Pacific University students, buildings, sports teams and outings. They illustrate the wide variety of activities in which Edith Hansen McGill participated while at college. Of particular note are the many pictures of sports team members, many of which are cut out into silhouettes and strikingly mounted on the black paper of the album. There are also many pictures of students holding Boxer (the Pacific University mascot), going on camping trips, visiting the beach, and socializing around campus. One loose page from another photograph album is laid in at the end.

The album is accompanied by a note dating from around 2003 related to Ken McGill, a member of the Pacific University Board of Trustees.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Edith Hansen McGill was a 1930 graduate of Pacific University who participated in many activities on campus. Originally from the small town of Gaston, Oregon, she majored in English. She was especially active in journalism and writing activities. She was the editor of The Index (the student newspaper) and The Oak Leaf in her senior year, of the Heart of Oak (the yearbook) in her junior year, of the Rook Bible (Pacific student handbook) her sophomore year, and of the Rook Index (May Day student newspaper) her freshman year. She served as an officer in the Theta Nu sorority, participated in the Y.W.C.A., and was active in numerous other groups on campus. In addition to this, she was one of only three women in her class to earn a "two-stripe" letterman jacket for extensive involvement in sports. She played on the women's volleyball, basketball, baseball, soccer and swimming teams.

Edith married another Pacific University graduate, Charles McGill (Class of 1926). Charles McGill, a doctor, later became a trustee of the university. One of their children, Ken McGill, became a trustee in 2002.
