Wallace A. Goates sheet music collection

Summary:The Wallace A. Goates sheet music collection (1890-1905) were recovered by the University of Utah's Theater Department from Goates's estate after his death. The music compositions were used by the Salt Lake Theater around the turn of the century. Goates joined the University of Utah faculty in 1937 teaching speech and theater. He subsequently became active in the field of communications disorders, founding the Speech and Hearing Clinic and the Special Education Department at the University of Utah as well as the first national preschool for hearing impaired children.

Summary:The Virgil Pershing Howe papers (1930-1960s) are comprised of theater materials concerning Howe (1918-1961), an amateur actor, and theatrical activities around Salt Lake City. Virgil Pershing Howe was raised in Heber, Utah, and spent most of his life doing theater work at the Salt Lake Theater and the University of Utah. He also served with the U.S. Marines during World War II.

Summary:This collection is a reflection of Marsha Midgley and her university theatrical career. In 1953, she was the lead in the theatre department's production of Saint Joan. Harry Nelson (1901-1988) was a theater student and friend of Maud May Babcock.

These materials were collected by Gail Plummer, a speech and theater instructor at the University of Utah, and his wife, Elva Plummer.
