Summary: Nickolas Kessler (1833-1901), a German immigrant, and his son Charles N. Kessler (1874-1957) were Helena, Montana, brewers, brick makers, and businessmen. Collection consists of six subgroups: Nickolas Kessler (1854-1900); Kessler Brewery (1865-1952); Kessler Brickyard (1877-1901); Saloon (1880-1901); Charles N. Kessler (1892-1950); and Nick Baatz Company (1914-1923). Collection includes correspondence, financial records, legal documents, subject files, production records, etc. reflecting the family's personal activities; Montana history, politics, and oil production; prohibition; and other topics.

Summary: The Montana Woman's Christian Temperance Union (Montana WCTU) was devoted to prohibition and other social reforms. The collection includes correspondence (1936-1976) of several state officials; constitution and minutes (1883-1971) of annual meetings; financial records (1883-1970s); membership books (1919-1960s); and printed material reflecting WCTU's national program and policies. Also included is a subgroup of records of the Kalispell WCTU locals, including correspondence, financial records, minutes and scrapbooks.

Summary:These Department of Institutions records consist of four subgroups: the State Reform School/State Industrial School (Miles City), the State Vocational School for Girls (Helena), the Swan River Youth Forest Camp, and the Women's Correctional Center (Warm Springs). The records (1894-1964) of the State Industrial School consist of correspondence, financial records, minutes, organizational materials, reports and subject files. The State Vocational School for Girls records (1930-1948) include correspondence and annual and quarterly reports. The Swan River Youth Forest Camp records (1976) consist of architectural specifications for remodeling the facility. The Women's Correctional Center records (1989-1991) include correspondence, financial records, legislative materials, and reports primarily concerning remodeling on the Warm Springs campus, and planning for a new facility. (Photographs and printed material have been transferred to the Photo Archives and the Library, respectively.)

Summary:Records (1867-1889) of the territorial executive offices consist of correspondence; financial records; oaths of office; treaties with the Bannack, Shoshone, and Sheepeater Indian tribes; reports of the insane asylum, the superintendent of schools, and various territorial agencies; and miscellany. Records (1889-1975) of the state executive offices consist of correspondence; departmental regulations; financial records; legal documents, including construction contracts for the state capitol and various state institutions, township descriptions; reports and inventories of state agencies; and miscellany, including automobile registration registers, a petition of John W. Darnell for release from a mental hospital, railroad licenses, and other matters. There are also subgroups for the Building and Loan Commission, the Capitol Site Commission, the Board of Charities and Reform, the Efficiency and Trade Commission, the State Board of Examiners, the Fish and Game Commission, the Law Library, the Railroad Commission, the Department of Weights and Measures, and the Board of World's Fair Managers.
