Summary:The Robert Anderson papers (1940-1990) contain correspondence, notebooks, research notes, maps, articles, news clippings, and manuscript drafts related to the life and work of this University of Utah Professor of Anthropology. Dr. Anderson's early research files concern the Cheyenne Indians. His later interest in psychiatry and anthropological theory culminated in the publication of his textbook The Cultural Context in 1976.

Summary:The Verne Dusenberry Papers provide a rich source of material about the Montana and Northern Plains Indians, in particular the Chippewa Cree (a.k.a./Metis, Landless Indians, Rocky Boy). They also offer some insights into the formative years of the Montana Institute of the Arts and Montana and Western authors of the 1950's and early 1960's. The materials consist of letters, personal papers, research work, and manuscripts collected or created by Verne Dusenberry. The papers also include teaching outlines, classroom aids, exams, and public addresses. The topics cover life ways, material culture, history, language, legends, religion including the Sun Dance and Peyote Cult, reservation concerns, land claims, and literature.

Lee Metcalf Papers

Summary: Lee Metcalf (1911-1978) served as U.S. Congressman from Montana from 1952 to 1961 and as U.S. Senator from 1961 until his death in 1978. The papers reflect Metcalf's wide range of interests, but especially reflect his involvement in public utilities regulation and protection of the natural environment. Over half of the collection consists of general correspondence (1951-1978) arranged alphabetically by subject and government agency. Name index card files of correspondents are available, one of which is organized alphabetically, another is arranged by location in Montana. Additionally in the collection are series for bills, printed materials, campaign materials, speeches and writings, voting records, and clippings. The Vic Reinemer Subgroup consists of general correspondence, outgoing correspondence, and subject files generated by Reinemer in his capacity as Metcalf's executive secretary and as staff director of the Senate Subcommittee on Banking, Management, and Expenditures.

Stanley J. Morrow Stereographs

Summary:Stanley J. Morrow was a prominent photographer in the Dakota and Montana territories who operated from 1868 through 1882. This collection of seventy stereographs contains scenes photographed by Morrow between 1868 and 1881. It includes views of Morrow’s home and studio in Yankton, D.T., military expeditions including views of General Crook’s 1876 expedition against the Lakota Sioux and images of George K. Sanderson’s cleanup of Little Bighorn Battlefield (1879), views of Fort Keogh (ca. 1878), and Indian portraits and village scenes.
