Summary:The 1876 Trip to the Geysers is an account of a trip to the geysers of Yellowstone in the fall of 1876 was written by M.A. Switzer in a daybook dated 1874. Included is a record of the mileage between the major stops made, supplies bought or sold, descriptions of the geysers, the terrain and the weather along the way. There are also copy photographs of the Switzer family.

Summary:A Pioneer Tale Reminiscence is a brief typewritten account written January 1954 that details Adeline Walrath’s journey to Bozeman, Montana in 1881 with her parents and their first residence in a log cabin north of Main Street. She mentions Gallatin County treasurer Washington Franklin Sloan and his kindness to the Brandenburg family, and the birth of her youngest sister Mattie on Christmas day 1882.

Summary:The Abbott-Stuart-Matejeck Family Papers consist of positive photocopies of business and personal papers collected or created by Teddy Blue, Mary Stuart Abbott, Granville Stuart, and Mary Abbott Matejcek. In addition to the papers are copy photographs of Teddy Blue, Mary Stuart Abbott, and their children; views of the Abbott ranch; portraits of several Stuart children; views of the Matejcek farm near Lewistown, taken by photographer Cook Reynolds, circa 1915-1922, which show big teams at work plowing and harvesting; an interior view of the Matejcek saloon in Roundup, Montana, circa 1913; a view of the Overland School taken around the turn of the century.

Summary:The Alfred E. Aiken Papers consist of eight original letters he wrote from 1885 to 1890 to his sister, Sabra Jane "Jennie" Aiken who was living in Frewsburg, New York. The letters were sent from Poplar Creek and Dawson County, Montana, and Fort Buford, North Dakota, and describe his impressions of the country, the military garrison at Poplar Creek, members of the tribes on the nearby reservation, incidents of ranch life, and family news. The letters are supplemented by a biographical essay, "A Cowpuncher's Prairie Romance," written by Aiken's granddaughter, Evelyn J. Aiken Jones.

William W. Alderson Diary

Summary:The William W. Alderson Diary are transcripts of diary notations from Alderson, 1864-1877, and additional entries by his son, Edward, from 1875 to 1879. Entries include information on the family's trip across the plains to Montana from Jo Daviess County, Illinois. The route followed what was then known as "Jacob's Cut-off" via Wind River, Gray Bull, Clark's Fork, and the Yellowstone Valley. Further entries describe the early settlement of Bozeman, Alderson's experiences as an Indian agent, and the purchase of the Avant Courier.

An additional folder containing a biographical sketch of Myers by Donna Brown has been added to the collection along with an original carte-de-visite photograph of Myers.

Summary:The Almon Spencer Diary consists of a single typescript transcript of a reminiscence written after 1903. The author describes his journey from Canada to Montana, giving details of both the oversea and overland journeys through several locations. He mentions receiving news of the death of President Lincoln, vigilance committees in Montana, and the dangers of winter travel through the mountains near Helena. He gives few details of his gold mine or his later business ventures.

Alpha Social Club minutes and Samuel Griffith Diary

Summary:The Alpha Social Club Minutes and Samuel Griffith Diary are the records of the establishment of an early Bozeman social club and the diary of a man who had moved to Illinois in the 1830s and then to Montana in the 1880s, respectively. These two documents, seemingly unrelated, were accessed as the contents of a single, standard business-style ledger book. The records for the Alpha Social club include a membership list and minute entries. The entries for the Samuel Griffith diary portion of the ledger include daily observations about the weather, important dates in his relationship with his wife, and comments on events which he determined to be important enough to record.

Summary:The American Society of Civil Engineers, Montana Section Records includes the constitution, bylaws and amendments of the Montana Section of the ASCE. Minutes, annual reports and annual meetings for the Montana Section and joint meetings/seminars and conventions were collected. Accumulations of the Montana Section's Treasurer's reports, bills, receipts, bank statements, ledgers and correspondence along with some years of financial materials from individual branches are in the collection. Assorted manuals, brochures, individual problems and conference papers, a fund raising program, award announcements and certificates for the entire Society and the Section were preserved along with newsletters of the Section, ASCE and individual Sections of the Pacific Northwest Council.

Summary:The Jesse G. Anderson Papers consist of a handwritten diary, June 21, 1914 through May 16, 1915; and a scrapbook, 1922 to 1925. The diary recounts his journey with his stepfather and mother as they journeyed from McKenzie County to Saskatchewan in search of a homestead site. Topics include: daily life, building a home, developing the land, landscape, travel conditions, wildlife, and social life. Locations include, Medicine Lake, Montana; Bone Trail; and North Battleford, Candada. The scrapbook contains information on courses, student submissions, and instructor feedback; it was compiled by Jesse while taking the International Correspondence School course in newspaper advertising.
