Summary:The Davis Bitton oral histories and autobiographies (1966-2005) are a collection of transcripts of oral histories conducted as an assignment for History 110 at the University of Utah. The interviews cover a wide range of Utah history, politics, government, and every day life. Bitton taught history at the University of Utah from 1966 to 1995.

Summary:The Brigham Young University oral history projects consists of transcripts of tapes of oral history interviews with eighty-two persons conducted as part of a series of projects by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University. Project topics include the Bamberger Railroad, BYU history, Charles Redd, the Interstate Brick Company, Labor in Utah, LDS chaplains, Polygamy, the Posey War, Provo City history, the San Rafael Swell, the Simpson Springs pony express station, and southeastern Utah. Interviews were conducted by various students and faculty at Brigham Young University. These oral history transcripts may not be photocopied.

Summary:The Hope A. Hilton papers (1815-1999) contain diaries, correspondence, research files, family histories and genealogy, news clippings, and manuscripts. Hope Hilton (1924-1999) was a writer and community activist who, along with her husband, organized the Middle East Foundation, a charitable organization devoted to helping students from the middle east obtain an education in the United States.

Italian oral history project

Summary:During the 1970s, the American West Center conducted interviews with ethnic minority Utah residents in an attempt to find out more about their life and experiences in America and Utah. The interviews contained in the Italian Oral Histories were conducted between 1971 and 1979. Events recalled by the interviewees span the period of time from the late 1800s to 1979. Topics covered include family life, early life in Italy, immigration, ethnic ceremonies and customs, social activities, work in the mines and railroads, relations with other ethnic groups, and achieving American citizenship. Most interviews were conducted by Phil Notarianni. Other interviewers include Floyd O'Neil, Kent Powell, Helen Papanikolas, and Mary Peterson. Also included is a transcript of a CBS news special, "Essay on the Mafia," recorded in June 1972.

Interviews begin with a short biography of the subject and cover topics such as discrimination, labor unions and social events. The American West Center conducted this and other ethnic oral history projects in an attempt to record the experiences Utah's eithnic minorities.

Summary:The Wesley Pratt Larsen papers (1802-2005) contain materials from Larsen's career as a biologist, as well as research on Utah history. Publications by Wesley P. Larsen include works on Indian and pioneer medicine in Utah Territory, 1847-1900, Southern Utah tales, and James Dalley family history, v.3. Larsen earned a Ph. D. from the University of Utah in 1960. He was the associate program directory for the National Science Foundation. He was probably best known for his research on insect stem cells.

Maw audio-visual collection (1941-1986) consists of audiocassettes of Maw's State Legislative Addresses in 1941 and 1943 and a 1986 conversation with Maw on KUER radio as well as a video interview from 1982. Herbert Brown Maw (1893-1990) was an attorney, educator, and Utah politician. He was elected as the 8th Governor of Utah and served from 1941 to 1949.

Jensen, in preparation for her publication of The Unfavored Few: The Autobiography of Joseph L. Rawlins. Joseph L. Rawlins (1850-1926) was dedicated to making Utah a state, and fought to change political situation that were objectionable to people outside the Utah Territory. His efforts were eventually introduced before the House of Representatives in a statehood bill.

Summary:The William B. Smart papers (1948-2000) is a collection of newspaper articles and other materials. Smart (b. 1922) went to work for The Deseret News in 1948, serving in several capacities until he became general editor and manager in 1974. Boxes 1 through 259 house alphabetized articles from The Deseret News and range in topic from budget issues, to civil rights, to the Pioneer State Theater in a thorough coverage of intermountain news, especially as it pertains to Utah.

Summary:The Enos and Jemima Child Stookey family biography consists of a bound biography of Enos Stookey (1829-1889)and Jemima Child Stookey (1827-1914) and their children that has been compiled by Gwenevere A. Stookey and Corrine S. Dods. Enos and Jemima Child Stookey were Mormon pioneers who moved from Belleville, Illinois, in 1855 to Salt Lake City, Utah, by wagon. After their arrival they moved to Rush Valley, Utah, and were some of the first established settlers in this area.

Summary:The Utah State Historical Society Board of Trustees meeting minutes [microform] (1958-1968) give a detailed record of the board's activities at probably the height of the Society's influence. Discussions regard Statehood Day and other celebrations, agency publications, tours and programs sponsored by the Society and other historical bodies, funding and donor support, and other topics incidental to the functioning of the Society. The Utah State Historical Society is a state agency charged with maintaining the state's historical record, exclusive of public records.

Utah Westerners records

Summary:The Utah Westerners records (1967-2009) includes the organization's bylaws and constitution, a calendar of events, lecture transcripts, correspondence, membership rosters, meeting minutes, field trip itineraries, completed questionnaires, membership applications, speech transcripts, and other documents. This collection also contains files kept by the Utah Westerners for two other organizations: the Fort Douglas Museum Association and Westerner's International. The Utah Westerners was organized in 1967. The major events of this all-male club are monthly lectures and annual field trips. These lectures and field trips allow club members to increase their knowledge of Western American history by addressing topics such as early Utah politics, Native Americans and westward expansion, Mormonism in the nineteenth century, and transportation, colonization, exploration, and communication in the West. The Utah Westerners holds its monthly lectures at the Alta Club in Salt Lake City.

Summary:The Feargus O'Connor Willden papers consist of an autobiography/diary of Feargus O'Connor Willden (1864-1878), autobiographical to 1878, then diary entries or transcription 1864-1868; family history to 1955 incorporating a typed transcription of the diary; papers related to an application for an Indian Wars veterans pension; a 1920 Indian Wars Veteran ribbon. Willden was a Utah Black Hawk War veteran and a resident of south-central Utah.
