Summary:John R. Garber was instrumental in an unsuccessful campaign to build a dam near Paradise along the Clark Fork in western Montana. This collection contains correspondence and clippings related to Garber's efforts. Also included are documents created by the Committee for Paradise Dam.

Summary:Perry Melton was a long time Kalispell labor union leader. This collection is organized into subgroups for Perry Melton's personal files; the Central Trades and Labor Council of Kalispell and Flathead County; the Painters Union #975; the Flathead Metal Trades Council; the Northwest Montana Building and Construction Trades Council; the Hotel, Restaurant and Bar Tenders International Union Locals 312 and 603; the Montana State Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); the Treasure State Labor Journal; and the United Textile Workers Union (North Carolina only). There are minor files concerning Melton's involvement with the Pacific Northwest Labor History Association, his service as a Flathead Valley Community College trustee, and his work with the Montana Committee for the Humanities.

Frances Logan Merriam Papers

Summary:Frances Merriam (b. 1899) served as the Executive Secretary of the Committee for Paradise Dam, an organization that promoted the construction of the Paradise and Knowles dams in western Montana. Papers (1948-1972) consist primarily of subject files and correspondence concerning the dams and her work in the Montana Democratic Party.

Lee Metcalf Papers

Summary: Lee Metcalf (1911-1978) served as U.S. Congressman from Montana from 1952 to 1961 and as U.S. Senator from 1961 until his death in 1978. The papers reflect Metcalf's wide range of interests, but especially reflect his involvement in public utilities regulation and protection of the natural environment. Over half of the collection consists of general correspondence (1951-1978) arranged alphabetically by subject and government agency. Name index card files of correspondents are available, one of which is organized alphabetically, another is arranged by location in Montana. Additionally in the collection are series for bills, printed materials, campaign materials, speeches and writings, voting records, and clippings. The Vic Reinemer Subgroup consists of general correspondence, outgoing correspondence, and subject files generated by Reinemer in his capacity as Metcalf's executive secretary and as staff director of the Senate Subcommittee on Banking, Management, and Expenditures.
