William W. Alderson Diary

Summary:The William W. Alderson Diary are transcripts of diary notations from Alderson, 1864-1877, and additional entries by his son, Edward, from 1875 to 1879. Entries include information on the family's trip across the plains to Montana from Jo Daviess County, Illinois. The route followed what was then known as "Jacob's Cut-off" via Wind River, Gray Bull, Clark's Fork, and the Yellowstone Valley. Further entries describe the early settlement of Bozeman, Alderson's experiences as an Indian agent, and the purchase of the Avant Courier.

Martha Roe Diary

Summary:The Martha Roe Diary traces Roe's journey from Grinnell Iowa on May 4 to Council Bluffs and the Platte River road. Roe arrived at Fort Laramie on July 2, Platte Bridge Station on July 12, and Independence Rock on July 25, 1864. The diary records routine daily activities and sketchy descriptions of fellow travelers. There is some description of encounters with plains Indians.

Summary:The Malphus A. Switzer Reminiscence recalls the trip the Switzer family made from Michigan City, Indiana to Iowa in 1854, and then describes another trip, made in 1865, from Victor, Iowa to Virginia City, Montana Territory.
