Anaconda Copper Mining Company records

Summary: This collection consists of records (1876-1974) of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and contains correspondence, court papers, financial and production records, legal documents, organizational records, subject files, and other materials for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and many of its predecessor and subsidiary companies and departments. Among the major subgroups are General Office; Big Blackfoot Milling Company; Bitter Root Development Company; Boston and Montana Consolidated Copper and Silver Mining Company; Colorado Smelting and Mining Company; Diamond Coal and Coke Company; Parrot Silver and Copper Company; Reduction Department (Anaconda); Silver Bow Club; Trenton Mining and Development Company; Tuttle Manufacturing and Supply Company; and Washoe Copper Company. In addition, there are more than 100 smaller subgroups.

Summary:This collection includes records of the Anaconda Forest Products Company and 16 subsidiary divisions owned, operated, or directly associated with the Bonner, Montana-based logging and lumber processing company between the years 1890 and 1971. Materials in this collection consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence, financial records, legal documents, personnel records, annual reports, company publications, photographs, 16-millimeter film, maps, and blueprints. The collection includes particularly extensive correspondence from principal company officials and division managers as well as bound volumes of financial transactions for the company's mill and retail operations.

Anaconda Smoke Case Defense Negatives

Summary:The Anaconda Smoke Case Defense Negatives consist of sixty-eight glass plate negatives in this collection created by Burke or attributed to him by the library staff that initially accessioned the material. Most of the images are of rural scenery presumably in the Deer Lodge valley, although several images of the town of Anaconda, along with two of the Willow Glen Stock Farm can be easily identified.

Summary:This collection includes color glass slide images of Anaconda Company logging sites in Montana and Idaho, ACM Camp #9 and #12, parts of a mill probably in Bonner, Montana including the mill dam at high and low water, log slips, loaded rail cars, and other logging images, 1952-1953.

Dixon was governor of Montana (1921-1925) and served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1903-1907), the U.S. Senate (1907-1913), and in the Department of the Interior; he was also a national leader in the Republican and Bull Moose Parties. This collection contains a large portion of his personal and professional correspondence files, legal documents, financial records, campaign/political materials, photographs, and personal effects.

Summary:Philip C. Johnson was a Forest Service entomologist and avid amateur photographer who lived in Missoula, Montana. His collection consists of railroad photographs that he took throughout the West, with many images from the San Francisco Bay area, Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia.

Robert I. Nesmith photographs

Summary:The Victory Labor Management Committees of Anaconda, Butte, and Great Falls published a biweekly newspaper during World War II entitled Copper Commando. The photographs in this collection were taken by Robert I. Nesmith and used in the publication from its first issue in 1942 through 1944. The images document the operations of mills, plants, smelters, and refineries owned by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and illustrate the daily work of individuals.

Summary:Reno Sales (1876-1969) was an Anaconda Company mining geologist, known as "The Father of Mining Geology." Papers include a biographical sketch by Vincent D. Perry and Charles Mayer; incoming and outgoing correspondence (1957-1967); diaries (1911, 1920-1968); writings; and miscellany. The Valley Ditch Company subgroup includes correspondence (1957-1966), financial records (1945-1966), minutes (1906-1964) and other materials.

Summary:K. Ross (Kenneth Ross) Toole was a well-known historian of Montana and the American West. This collection largely contains correspondence, research materials and writings, and faculty materials from 1961, when he was named the A.B. Hammond Professor of Western History at the University of Montana in Missoula, to his death in 1981.
