John C. Ainsworth papers

Summary:John Commingers Ainsworth (1822-1893) was the major founder of the Oregon Steam Navigation (OSN) Company, the most powerful transportation monopoly in the Pacific Northwest. Ainsworth was also involved in a number of other ventures, including the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR) and various gold, silver and coal mining operations. The John Commingers Ainsworth Papers contain Ainsworth's diaries, autobiography, personal correspondence, photographs, and the business records of the Oregon Central Railroad, Oregon Steam Navigation Company, Northern Pacific Railroad Company, and various mining, building and shipping enterprises.

Clarence Leroy Andrews papers

Summary:Clarence Leroy Andrews was an employee of the Interior Department Bureau of Education and Reindeer Service in Alaska in the 1920s. He focused on Eskimos and their use of reindeer herds, writing several books about Eskimo life in Alaska. He was especially concerned with corporations which exploited reindeer herds, and led a campaign in the 1930s to remove Carl Momen of Seattle from control of the reindeer industry. The C. L. Andrews papers consist largely of business and personal correspondence, published and unpublished manuscripts, and photographs. Important to the collection are the W. T. Lopp files that relate to education in Alaska and the reindeer service from 1908-1939.

Summary:Walter S. Bowman (1865-1938) was a professional photographer who worked in Pendleton, Oregon, from the late 1880s to the mid 1930s. Bowman's photographs document daily life in Eastern Oregon, including special events such as the Pendleton Round-Up. The collection consists of almost 800 negatives and prints representative of the span of the photographer's work, but his noted images of tribal people were largely destroyed after his death.

Summary:William Burke (dates unknown) photographed the Southern Oregon communities of Coos, Curry and Douglas counties from the 1900s to the 1930s. In 1912 Burke and F.F. Sasman traveled on a Pathfinder to demonstrate the need for better roads on the coast. The collection consists of 380 images, prints and negatives, of community events, shipping, railroads, logging, mining and ship-building, and the Pathfinder expedition.

Summary:June D. Drake was a commercial photographer in Silverton, Oregon, from 1904-1960. He used his photographs of Silver Falls in an active and successful campaign to establish Silver Falls State Park in 1931. The collection consists of 28 vintage prints in studio mounts, documenting landscape and events in the Silverton area. One series shows railroad construction.

"Electric Studio" is a franchise name that appeared in locations throughout the West. The collection consists of five images and documents rodeo people and activities, and a Pendleton event. Summary:Gerald H. Robinson (1927-) is a fine art photographer and photography advocate as well as a noted Portland attorney. He was a founding member of the Friends of Photography and Portland's Group 15, has exhibited his work widely, and served as an instructor in photography at several colleges. The collection consists of matted and signed prints dating from 1949-2000, as well as 14 prints created by his associates: Bernard Freemesser (8), Larry Smith (1), Max Allard (2), Marvin R. Goodman (2), and Bob Barnes (1).
