Anaconda Copper Mining Company records

Summary: This collection consists of records (1876-1974) of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and contains correspondence, court papers, financial and production records, legal documents, organizational records, subject files, and other materials for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and many of its predecessor and subsidiary companies and departments. Among the major subgroups are General Office; Big Blackfoot Milling Company; Bitter Root Development Company; Boston and Montana Consolidated Copper and Silver Mining Company; Colorado Smelting and Mining Company; Diamond Coal and Coke Company; Parrot Silver and Copper Company; Reduction Department (Anaconda); Silver Bow Club; Trenton Mining and Development Company; Tuttle Manufacturing and Supply Company; and Washoe Copper Company. In addition, there are more than 100 smaller subgroups.

Churchill family photograph collection

Summary:David Harvey (D.H.) and Mary (Minnie) Shelton Churchill lived and ranched near Ulm, Montana from 1875-1893. When D.H. died, Mary and their four children struggled to maintain the ranch, but the Panic of 1893 foreclosed banks and limited the resources available to them. The family sold the ranch and eventually moved first to Spokane, Washington, then Vancouver, Washington and finally to Portland, Oregon. The collection includes photographs of friends and family members, their ranch near Ulm, Montana, other residences, including those in Washington and Oregon, cities and towns in Montana, Oregon, and Washington, harness racing and racing horses, navy boats, ships and sailors, women and children.

Lee Metcalf Photograph Collection

Summary:Lee W. Metcalf (1911-1978) served as a Montana state congressman, state assistant attorney general, World War II soldier and military prosecutor, and a Montana Supreme Court Associate Justice between 1937 and 1952. From 1952 to 1961, he held Montana’s First District U.S. Representatives seat. In 1961, he became a U.S. Senator, serving until his death on January 12, 1978. The photographs in this collection depict all aspects of Metcalf’s life and service in public office, including images of his time in various Montana government offices, as a U.S. Congressman, and as a U.S. Senator. Images from Metcalf’s personal life are included, showing Metcalf’s ancestors from Maine and Massachusetts; his early life and school days; his wife Donna and their son Jerry; Metcalf’s parents and their family; and scenes from his regular life outside of public office. The bulk of the collection is focused on the later part of his term as a U.S. Congressman, through his many years in the U.S. Senate, from 1958 to 1977. Originally housed within Metcalf’s congressional offices, many of these images were used by Metcalf and his office staff from 1953 to 1978 for various publications, television and film recordings, congressional hearing exhibits, newspaper articles, and election and publicity materials.

Summary:These records (1945-1967) of the Montana Aeronautics Commission consist of correspondence, minutes, reports, and subject files. There is a large subgroup for the Montana Aviation History Project, headed by Frank W. Wiley, consisting of research materials used in compiling the book Montana and the Air, a history of Montana's aviation industry and aviation pioneers.
