Summary:John Commingers Ainsworth (1822-1893) was the major founder of the Oregon Steam Navigation (OSN) Company, the most powerful transportation monopoly in the Pacific Northwest. Ainsworth was also involved in a number of other ventures, including the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR) and various gold, silver and coal mining operations. The John Commingers Ainsworth Papers contain Ainsworth's diaries, autobiography, personal correspondence, photographs, and the business records of the Oregon Central Railroad, Oregon Steam Navigation Company, Northern Pacific Railroad Company, and various mining, building and shipping enterprises.

Summary:Clarence Leroy Andrews was an employee of the Interior Department Bureau of Education and Reindeer Service in Alaska in the 1920s. He focused on Eskimos and their use of reindeer herds, writing several books about Eskimo life in Alaska. He was especially concerned with corporations which exploited reindeer herds, and led a campaign in the 1930s to remove Carl Momen of Seattle from control of the reindeer industry. The C. L. Andrews papers consist largely of business and personal correspondence, published and unpublished manuscripts, and photographs. Important to the collection are the W. T. Lopp files that relate to education in Alaska and the reindeer service from 1908-1939.

Kearney W. Barton collection of Northwest sound recordings

Summary: The Kearney W. Barton collection of Northwest sound recordings primarily consists of original recordings engineered and/or produced by Barton at Audio Recording, Inc., his own recording studio, which operated out of various locations in Seattle, Washington from 1961 through the late 2000s. The bulk of the collection is comprised of music recordings, but also contains a smaller percentage of spoken word recordings, as well as radio advertisements (many of which also incorporate music). Specific audio formats represented in the collection include: open reel analog tape, compact cassettes, analog sound discs (7 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch, and 16 inch), magnetic wire records, and compact discs. The collection also contains a small amount of manuscript material, which mainly consists of technical notes that were found with some recordings and very limited correspondence (chiefly from lawyers). In some instances, notes included on original containers also have been preserved when material has been rehoused.

Summary:Walter S. Bowman (1865-1938) was a professional photographer who worked in Pendleton, Oregon, from the late 1880s to the mid 1930s. Bowman's photographs document daily life in Eastern Oregon, including special events such as the Pendleton Round-Up. The collection consists of almost 800 negatives and prints representative of the span of the photographer's work, but his noted images of tribal people were largely destroyed after his death.

Cache Valley Refugee Oral History Project collection

Summary:Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). In May 2015, USU’s FFA and Folklore Program, with help from the Karen community, hosted a Library of Congress Field School for Cultural Documentation: “Voices: Refugees in Cache Valley.” Field school students worked to document Cache Valley’s recent refugee communities. This collection, Folk Coll 58: Cache Valley Refugee Oral History Project, houses the physical recordings, release forms, and associated materials of the interviews which took place during this field school.
