Albert and Hugh Rogers Adair Papers

Summary:Albert Adair was employed in the Montana State Liquor Store No. 1 in Helena (1935-1941); served as an inspector for the Montana State Fire Marshall (1954-1957); was an insurance examiner for the National Board of Insurance Commissioners; and was elected a public service commissioner. Hugh Rogers Adair was employed as the Helena city attorney; and served as lieutenant governor under Roy Ayers (1937-1941); and as chief justice of the Montana Supreme Court. (1947-1957). Both brothers were active in the Democratic Party. This collection is divided into eight series: campaign materials (1965-1971); general correspondence (1941-1968); speeches (1936-1950, n.d.); subject files (1932-1974, n.d.); and miscellany (1936-1981, n.d.).

Eleanor Roberts Baltzell Letter

Summary:The Elanor Roberts Baltzell Letter was written to Mrs. H. R. Wahoske of Great Falls, Montana by Eleanor R. Baltzell, on July 9, 1924 after reading the proceedings of the Montana Conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Great Falls. The letter discusses about her father, Thomas P. Roberts and his work with the Northern Pacific Railroad when the line was being surveyed in Montana during 1872 and 1873. The letter also points out paginated references to his work appearing in Olin D. Wheeler’s The Trail of Lewis and Clark, 1804-1904 (New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1904).

Summary:The Albert and Vera Cuglietta papers consist of fiftieth anniversary and family reunion materials, along with professional items related to Albert's career with the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Albert worked for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad for almost 50 years and Vera served in the secretarial pool for the Secretary of State from 1963 until 1980 or 1981. They enjoyed traveling to together and photographed many historical sites in Italy, Romania, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Japan, Bali, and Hong Kong.

Summary:The Eva Gates Manuscript consists of a typescript of the early history and founding of Mineral County, Montana, by Eva and Elmer H. Gates. Included are town histories of Alberton, Fish Creek, Saltese (Silver City), Taft, Iron Mountain, Superior, Cedar Creek, Carter, Keystone, Amador, and Deborgia. There are accounts of mining activities, major structures erected in each town, early settlers, ethnic groups in the area, ferries, mills, fires, roads, and railroads.

Summary:The Alfred Hart photograph collection consists of The Traveler's Own Book, which is a travel guide for the railroad route from Chicago to San Francisco produced by Central Pacific Railroad photographer Alfred A. Hart in 1870. This book consists of detailed maps of the entire route, two Utah photographs on the front and rear covers, and twelve photo-chromolithographic views. In the book Hart describes the main features and sights along the lines, and gives advice on where to stay, dine, and even shop.

Abby Williams Hill Collection

Summary:Abby Williams Hill (1861-1943) was a landscape painter who worked primarily in the American West. She is known for her commissioned works for the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads, which were exhibited at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland in 1905, the Jamestown Centennial in 1907, and the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. The Abby Williams Hill Collection contains approximately 150 paintings and drawings and includes letters, diaries, daybooks, postcards, news clippings, ephemera, and artifacts documenting the life of Hill and her family. The Hill Collection documents her travels across the nation and in Europe, her relationship with her husband and four children, her experiences hiking and painting in the Pacific Northwest wilderness, and her passion for social causes including her work with the Congress of Mothers.

Summary:The Merchants National Bank of Helena, Montana, was originally established as L.H. Hershfield and Co. in Virginia City, Montana Territory, and for many years operated as L.H. Hershfield and Bro. It went into receivership in 1897. Records (1865-1903) consist of correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and organizational materials. There are subgroups for the White Sulphur Springs Association and for the United Hebrew Benevolent Association.

Lee Metcalf Papers

Summary: Lee Metcalf (1911-1978) served as U.S. Congressman from Montana from 1952 to 1961 and as U.S. Senator from 1961 until his death in 1978. The papers reflect Metcalf's wide range of interests, but especially reflect his involvement in public utilities regulation and protection of the natural environment. Over half of the collection consists of general correspondence (1951-1978) arranged alphabetically by subject and government agency. Name index card files of correspondents are available, one of which is organized alphabetically, another is arranged by location in Montana. Additionally in the collection are series for bills, printed materials, campaign materials, speeches and writings, voting records, and clippings. The Vic Reinemer Subgroup consists of general correspondence, outgoing correspondence, and subject files generated by Reinemer in his capacity as Metcalf's executive secretary and as staff director of the Senate Subcommittee on Banking, Management, and Expenditures.

Randall V. Mills papers

Summary:Randall Vause Mills joined the University of Oregon English faculty in 1938. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mills wrote two books and numerous articles on transportation in the Pacific Northwest. He also wrote articles on bridge construction and location. In addition, Mills was interested in folklore, and was the founder and first president of the Oregon Folklore Society. The collection largely consists of correspondence, manuscripts, research material and notecards, printed material, photographs, and scrapbooks pertaining to transportation in the Pacific Northwest and folklore.

Summary:The Agriculture Photograph collection includes photographs, nitrate negatives, safety negatives, and glass plate negatives created by or collected by M.L. Wilson. Images in this collection pertain to agricultural subjects and projects studied 1901 to 1945 at Montana State College. Image subject include: alfalfa, barley, clover, corn, grain, grass, wheat, sunflowers, thistles, and vegetables. Other subjects include: demonstration and field days, experiment stations, farm machinery, farmsteads, dryland farming, tillage, harvesting, erosion, livestock, rural life in Montana, and pot tests. Of particular interest are numerous images of "big hitch" teams, horse-drawn implements using eight or more teams of draft animals for power.
