Summary:The Alice Gold and Silver Mine records (1880-1906) contain correspondence, receipts, account balances, insurance memoranda, orders, assay reports, general ledgers, telegrams, and a 1896 annual report. The Alice Gold and Silver Mining Company was a mining operation in Walkerville, Montana founded in 1878. Its headquarters were in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Summary: This collection consists of records (1876-1974) of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and contains correspondence, court papers, financial and production records, legal documents, organizational records, subject files, and other materials for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and many of its predecessor and subsidiary companies and departments. Among the major subgroups are General Office; Big Blackfoot Milling Company; Bitter Root Development Company; Boston and Montana Consolidated Copper and Silver Mining Company; Colorado Smelting and Mining Company; Diamond Coal and Coke Company; Parrot Silver and Copper Company; Reduction Department (Anaconda); Silver Bow Club; Trenton Mining and Development Company; Tuttle Manufacturing and Supply Company; and Washoe Copper Company. In addition, there are more than 100 smaller subgroups.

Samuel Thomas Hauser Papers

Summary:Samuel T. Hauser (1833-1914) was a Helena, Montana, Territory, pioneer, territorial governor (1885-1886), and entrepreneur in the fields of banking, mining, smelting, ranching, railroads, irrigation, and hydro-electric power. More than fifty percent of the collection is incoming correspondence (1864-1914). There are also outgoing correspondence, financial records, legal documents, organizational records, and reports. Included are thirty-eight subgroups of the Hauser family and Hauser's business enterprises.

Cornelius Hedges Family Papers

Summary:Cornelius Hedges (1831-1907) was a pioneer Helena, Montana, miner and attorney. Collection consists primarily of diaries (1849-1857, 1863-1893, 1906-1907), covering his education at Yale College, his travel to Montana Territory, in 1864 via the Bridger Cutoff trail, and his participation in the Washburn-Doane Expedition of 1870 to what became Yellowstone Park. There is also incoming correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and materials for other family members.

Summary: Anton M. Holter (1831-1921) was a pioneer Helena, Montana, lumberman and founder of the A.M. Holter Hardware Company. Papers (1831-1921) include correspondence, and organizational and financial records relating to mining, agriculture, lumber, real estate, and oil interests of three generations of the family, headed successively by Anton M. Holter, Norman B. Holter, and Norman J. "Jeff" Holter. Many of the enterprises were in partnership with Samuel T. Hauser. Interests include the A.M. Holter Hardware Company; Holter Realty; Holter Research Foundation; Judith Farms; Montana Flour Mills; and the Helena and Frisco, Helena and Victor, the Maginnis mining companies, and many others.

Jumbo Mining Development Company Records

Summary:The Jumbo Mining and Development Company was a gold mining operation near White Sulphur Springs, Montana. Records (1890-1956) include minutes, bylaws, stock certificates and transfers. Also there are limited amounts of incoming correspondence and financial records. An account book includes a brief history of the company.

Leverett S. Ropes papers

Summary: Helena, Montana, mining and geological engineer Leverett Ropes (1868-1953) was employed by various mining firms, by the federal government, and as a private consultant. This collection contains papers (ca. 1888-1952) concerning Ropes' mining engineering and geology consulting work and his interest in a variety of political issues. The general correspondence (1928-1952) concerns mines in Lewis and Clark, Jefferson, and Broadwater counties, Fort Peck Dam, his dispute with federal agencies over financing of Montana mining ventures, and issues of personal interest to Ropes such as the repeal of prohibition and New Deal policies. In addition there is biographical material (1935-1946); court papers (1910, 1940); financial records (1936-1951); legal documents (1928-1943) for several mining companies; reports (1929-1952) by Ropes and others on numerous mining properties; speeches and writings (1929-1952) on mining and politics, including the lawlessness (racketeering) caused by prohibition; miscellany (1891-1947); and clippings.

His papers (1937-1978) include incoming and outgoing correspondence dealing with mining and ore processing, patents, political and monetary policies for the state, and the history of Nelson, Wisconsin; financial records; legal documents; maps; production records for the Gulf Claim and the Star Mine of Neihart, the Hilger Ore Milling Company of Lewistown, and the Tamarack Mine near Sheridan; writings; clippings; and miscellany. Also included are subgroups for the Green-Campbell Mining Company and the Montana Western Mining Company.

Papers include general correspondence (1909-1912); three letterpress books of outgoing correspondence (1911-1914) concerning his legal work and his involvement in the Montana Democratic Party; a case file for Mrs. Ed Newman vs. Nat Simons concerning the Consolidated Gold and Sapphire Mining Company; and minor records for the Boulder Creek Mining Company, the Tripp and Dragstedt Company; the Treasure State Mineral Company, and the Harrison Mutual Benefit Association.
