Summary:Lumber baron Frank Silas Doernbecher left a sizeable allotment from his estate for what ultimately became the Doernbecher Memorial Hospital for Children. The Ada Doernbecher Morse papers showcase the manner in which charitable private donations and organized fund-raising played a part in making such a need a physical reality. This collection houses a variety of materials, including family portraits, a scrapbook of news clippings, publications, and a time-line of the hospital’s history, assembled for the 60th Anniversary.

Summary:The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) was founded at the 1970 Annual Session of the American Dental Association, created to mobilize and support dental students across the country. The ASDA Chapter Records consist of three scrapbooks from the school years 2000/2001, 2001/2002, and 2002/2003, created by the OHSU chapter of the organization, including brochures, newsletters, correspondence, photographs, and promotional advertisements from dental vendors.

Summary:Robert Leroy Anderson, D.M.D. was born in Baker, Oregon in 1924. He graduated from the University of Oregon Dental School in 1952. He maintained a dental practice in Portland, Oregon from 1952-1986. Dr. Anderson died on March 7, 2008. Karen Ann Brinkman, R.D.H., (registered dental hygienist ) was a graduate of the UO Dental School, Dental Hygeine Program. She served as an instructor in the Dental Hygeine program of the UO Dental School and author for dental publications. She was employed by Dr. Robert L. Anderson as a dental hygienist. They were married in 1991. The materials consist of documents, certificates, photographs, drawings and an audiotape.

Clarice Ashworth Francone medical illustration collection

Summary:Clarice Ashworth Francone studied at the Art Insitutute of Chicago and later studied medical illustration under Max Broedel at Johns Hopkins University. Ashworth moved to Oregon in 1929 and worked as a freelance illustrator, and in 1936, started working part-time at the University of Oregon Medical School, eventually becoming the head of the Medical Illustration Department. She is best known for her work on the anatomy and physiology textbook, Structure and Function of Man, which she co-authored with Dr. Stanley Jacob, professor of surgery at the University of Oregon Medical School. The Francone Papers consist of preliminary sketches in pencil, finished drawings, books, published drawings and proofs of works by other medical illustrators, photographs, and some personal items.

Summary:David W. E. Baird graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1926. He served as Associate Dean, and then Dean of the School of Medicine from 1943 to 1968, was responsible for the administration of the Oregon Primate Center, and a member of the Portland Clinic staff. This collection consists of news articles, photographs, publications, reports, policies, and correspondence from Baird's time as Associate Dean until his retirement.

Summary:J.Peter Bentley was trained in England as a biochemist before coming to the U.S. to do wound healing research at Harvard. He continued this in Oregon after getting his Ph.D. at University of Oregon Medical School. Also known as a student mentor and Assistant Dean of Planning, he was picked in 1976 to lead a study group on creating a Faculty Senate. These related files were donated in 1998.

Summary:Birth Home, Inc. was the fourth birthing center to open in Oregon. Operating from 1982 to 1986, the non-profit birthing center was staffed by obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, and family practice physicians and provided an alternative to hospital births for low-risk women. These records document the daily and administrative operations of the Birth Home as well as their involvement in the community and published materials collected by the organization.

Summary:The BRAINet Records Collection consists of 27 folders containing membership rosters, correspondence, meeting minutes, governing rules, and promotional materials. The collection also includes publications linked to members of BRAINet, including Dr. Roger Meyer and James Hawthorne Beck. The collection consists of two 5 x 12 boxes containing textural documents, all in good condition. The Brain Research Awareness and Information Network (BRAINet) is the volunteer outreach organization for the OHSU Brain Institute (OBI). The purpose of BRAINet is to promote awareness and support for OBI and neuroscience research with public education and community engagement. BRAINet offers an annual membership that includes benefits such as attendance to luncheons, Brain Awareness lectures, annual meetings, volunteer opportunities, and board elections.

Casey Bush collection on Robert S. Dow

Summary:Dr. Robert S. Dow established the first EEG laboratory in the Pacific Northwest and the first neurology practice in Oregon. He served as the Head of the Department of Neurology at Good Samaritan Hospital where he developed a treatment for epilepsy through electrical stimulation to the cerebellum. This collection was assembled by Casey Bush during the course of his research into writing Dow's biography. Highlights include Dow's notes and writings on the history of medical education and neurological research, as well as his presentation on the rare neurodegenerative disorder, kuru, and his experimental research on the relationship between cobalt, epilepsy, and the cerebellum.

His research focused primarily on enabling those with broken spinal cords to regain function of limbs below the break.

Crashaw, M.D. (1921-2014) focused his career on a combination of medicine and humanism, working in the areas of medical ethics, addiction, mental health issues, and suicide prevention. He was a tireless campaigner for the medically underserved and is known as the "Godfather of the Oregon Health Plan." This collection showcases Crawshaw's philosophical evolution from his early romantic notions of medicine to his later disillusionment by what he saw as a heartless focus on technical skills.
