Cache Valley Refugee Oral History Project collection

Summary:Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). In May 2015, USU’s FFA and Folklore Program, with help from the Karen community, hosted a Library of Congress Field School for Cultural Documentation: “Voices: Refugees in Cache Valley.” Field school students worked to document Cache Valley’s recent refugee communities. This collection, Folk Coll 58: Cache Valley Refugee Oral History Project, houses the physical recordings, release forms, and associated materials of the interviews which took place during this field school.

Summary:During Fall semester 2018, six interviews were conducted by students: Jonah Bibo, Alyson Griggs, Haden Griggs, Mason Stott, Frankie Urrutia-Smith, and Landon Wilkey with USU climate scientists for the graduate oral history course History 6860-002 . The scientists shared information about the changing climate, including how it affects communities. The project received USU IRB approval: 9676.

Summary:The Clyde Eddy collection contains 14 photographs, a postcard and documents relating to Clyde Eddy’s 1927 expedition down the Colorado River. The 14 photographs depict Clyde Eddy, their boats the Dellenbagh and Coronado, and the crew which was made up of Robert H. Weatherhead, John H. Marshall, Frederick L. Felton, Edward L. Holt, Vincent F. Callaway, Robert F. Bartl, Vincent F. Carey, O.A. Seager, W. Gordon Adger, Bradley-Camera Man, Parley Galloway-River Guide, and McGregory. Two of the photos have an International News stamp on the back. The collection also contains a postcard depicting Clyde Eddy and captioned “Just ran in to wish you a Merry Christmas.”

Images of dead bodies, bodies in rubble, and removing bodies from what appears to be destroyed builings (Italy?) during WWII. Some of the images are commercially produced, but it is unknown if Smith took the remainder.

Summary:The Frank Kelsey collection consists of 2,532 images related to the history of aviation in Utah. Included are images of Kelsey's years of designing, building, and flying gliders, publicity photos for the Kemp-Kelsey Airservice (and later the Ellis-Kelsey Airservice at the Salt Lake Municipal Airport), airplanes (especially Beechcraft) from the 1930s-1970s, the University of Utah Glider club, cloud seeding, and wind and hail damage to airplanes. Also included are images that Kelsey collected documenting the history of pilots, planes, and airports in Utah.

Summary:The Great Salt Lake Wetlands History Project is a joint effort of Utah State University (USU), Weber State University, Westminster College, and the University of Utah. The project’s aim was to gather oral histories, photographs of material culture and wetlands culture, and records to document the fascinating history of the Great Salt Lake wetlands (GSLW) and the people who work and play along its shores and marshes as well as to enhance the existing GSLW collections at the four institutions. During Utah State University’s collecting day at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge on May 6, 2017, USU Special Collections & Archives, folklore curator interviewed community scholars about their experiences on the Great Salt Lake. The collection includes eight interviews, images, and associated release forms.

Summary:The F. Jay Haynes photograph collection consists of one album with 12 images of Yellowstone National Park probably taken in 1882. Views are of popular tourist attractions in Yellowstone including Golden Gate, Minerva Terrace, Mammoth Hot Springs, Pulpit Terrace, Old Faithful, Grotto Geyser Cone, among others. Collection also includes a National Park Transportation Company ticket.

Summary:The Alfred Hart photograph collection consists of The Traveler's Own Book, which is a travel guide for the railroad route from Chicago to San Francisco produced by Central Pacific Railroad photographer Alfred A. Hart in 1870. This book consists of detailed maps of the entire route, two Utah photographs on the front and rear covers, and twelve photo-chromolithographic views. In the book Hart describes the main features and sights along the lines, and gives advice on where to stay, dine, and even shop.

Ronald Jensen photograph collection.

Summary:Ronald Jensen was born in Huntsville, Utah. In 1916 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served until the end of World War I. In 1929 he became the head of the banking department of a California cotton company. Soon after his retirement in 1970, he bought the Grant Hill Farm in Cache Valley and donated it to Utah State University in order that it become the Ronald V. Jensen Historical Living Farm and the Man and His Bread Museum. The Historical Living Farm was later renamed the American West Heritage Center.

Summary:This small but significant collection includes original negatives and photographs of Beat Generation poets Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Philip Whalen, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Creeley, and friends, made by Walter Lehrman from November 1955 through June 1956.

Summary:The Mary M. Marks photograph collection consists of approximately 301 glass plate negatives (with modern paper prints) and 24 prints without negatives. The images are from the Oro Grande Placer Mine and the Gold Pan Mining Company on the Blue and Snake Rivers in Colorado and include mining pits, dredges, flumes, ditches, and surveying/engineering parties. Other images are of railroad depots and homes in Summit County Colorado (Breckenridge and Dillon). Also included are images of Mary, her friends Allice Miller and Kate Schwalback, and her husband John. Rounding out the collection are two oversize boxes with negatives of maps of Colorado, and mining engineering plans.

Merl LaVoy photograph collection.

Summary:The Merl LaVoy photograph colleciton consists of 125 images, mostly from a 1930 expedition to the remote Prayer Rock District on the Navajo Reservation in Northeast Arizona. The Prayer Rock expedition was an archaeological foray sponsored by Charles Bernheimer into some lesser known canyons around the Lukachukai Mountains. The photos show expedition members in ruins, the pack train, a few artifacts including a huge basket, and many ruin structures. Another portion of the photos focuses on the Native Americans in the area, with many close-ups of Puebloan potters, Navajo weavers, children, and sheepherders. Also included are scenes from Zion National Park's tunnel (probably at its official opening in 1930), reenactment scenes with many covered pioneer wagons, men with telescopes, and a Keystone view of a diver mid-air at the El Mirador Hotel in Palm Springs. World traveler and adventurer/photographer Merl LaVoy took the photographs.

Summary:Consists of 101 color and black and white images of the adventures of three Minnesota young women working in Yellowstone National Park in the summer of 1951. Some of the images are commercially produced and some are personal snapshots. The album includes written narration. Images inside the park are of Old Faithful Lodge, Tower Falls, and the upper and lower Yellowstone Falls. Pictures from outside the park include West Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Shoshone Dam, the Buffalo Bill statue in Cody, Wyoming, and the Beartooth Highway Summit.

Summary:The Allen Ginsberg photograph collection consists of 4 strips of black and white negative film with 24 total individual images, a contact sheet, eight 8x10 enlargments from these individual negatives, and seven additional images from various stages of Ginsberg's life from the 1950s to the 1970s. All of the negatives appear to be from an unknown Ginsberg lecture on Buddhist Mantras. In some of the images Ginsberg is playing a harmonium.

Summary:25 color slides taken by France in the summer of 1953 of a crash site. The C-46 military transport plane crashed in Franklin County, north of Beaver Mountain, on January 7, 1953. Images include broken trees, overviews of the site, engines, part of the tail with France, and pieces of the plane. A women and another man appear in the images.

Summary:Consists of a scrapbook with photographs and newspaper clippings from a visit by Vice-Presidental nominee Gerald Ford in October 1973 to visit his son John (Jack) Ford (who was attending Utah State University) in Tremonton, Utah at the home of Gloria and James Brown. Brown was the manager of public relations for Thiokol Chemical corporation. Also included is a letter from Gerald Ford to Flo Munson who wrote articles about the visit. In addition to Gerald and John Ford, Betty Ford is also included in the images.

Snyder Sisters Travel Album photograph collection.

Summary:The Snyder Sisters Travel Album collection documents a 1941 trip made by sisters Emma A. Snyder (1871-1965) and Mae Snyder (1867-1950) to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. The album consists of 60 hand colored images as well as postcards, commercial travel items, letters, and original narratives. Emma and Mae worked as school teachers in Baltimore, Maryland. The items are arranged in a photograph album with each item labeled. In addition to visiting Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, the sisters also visited other Western sites such as the Buffalo Bill Memorial in Cody, Wyoming, Pike’s Peak, and Colorado Springs.

Summary:1,163 black & white and color photographs, 890 black & white negatives (4x5, 5x7, and 35 mm negatives), 48 black & white glass plate negatives, cyanotypes, duplicates and photocopies, and copies from pages in Mr. Somers' books. Most of the images were taken in Cache Valley (Utah and Idaho, Logan and Logan Canyon, Utah and the Bear River Range, Box Elder County and Southeastern Idaho). A few are from Wyoming, Hawaii, and California. Subjects include the Utah State Agricultural and Brigham Young Colleges of Logan, Cardon Jewelry company and family, Stanford University, the Logan L.D.S. Temples and Tabernacle, Hampton's Ford, fishing, hunting, and camping, railroads, the Jim Bridger Centennial Celebration, the 145th Artillery Unit, businesses and buildings of Cache Valley, parades, portraits of Logan residents and homes, the Peterson farm in Petersboro, agricultural scenes, the Hercules Power Plant, Shoshone Indians, and Bear River Canyon. Most images were taken during 1890-1940.
