Jeffers Family Collection

Summary:The Jeffers Family Collection includes transcriptions or photocopies of diaries, ledgers, correspondence, interviews, historical essays and reminiscences related to the Jeffers, Ennis and Chowning families of Madison County, Montana. Of particular interest for livestock and grazing history are the nomination documents and associated materials for Myron Jeffers membership in the Cowboy Hall of Fame, including a transcript of his 1871 cattle drive diary. Also contributing to this area of interest are the record books of Charles W. Chowning of the Montana Cattle Company. The balance of the collection includes: a history of the Madison Valley Women's Club; papers of the Fairweather Pioneer Society of Madison County with minutes, financial records and membership roles and several histories; some financial records and clippings about the Trinity Episcopal Church, Jeffers MT and Trinity Guild; and a ledger of the Ennis Storage and Freighting has been transcribed. A scrapbook of clippings of articles on Montana history and one typed article by Judge Lew L. Callaway written in 1923-34 and a booklet of a news series in the Butte Miner by Frank D. (Sand Bar) Brown in 1927 collected by Winifred Jeffers are present. There are also five photographs and negatives of family members.

Mary Redfield Lindsey Papers

Summary:The Mary Redfield Lindsey Papers is a collection of historical interest stories, mostly written by DeHaven, printed in the Virginia City Madisonian or the Great Falls Tribune newspapers from 1952 to 1965. Also included are three brochures on the topic of the history of Montana Methodism, photocopies of oral history transcriptions and an unpublished reminiscence of DeHaven's childhood.

Summary:The Madison County Centennial Writing Contest Collection was a competition sponsored by the public schools of Madison County, Montana in 1964, to encourage student research in the history of the county. The topics ranged from biography to community history, with many based on personal interviews conducted by the authors.

Summary:The McAllister Collection consists of manuscript biographies of early Meadow Creek residents: "William A. Fletcher," by Edithe Evans Fletcher, ca. 1964; "John Jacob Deuble," by Doris Wilson, ca. 1964; "James Alexander McAllister," by Mae Pankey, ca. 1964. Also included are: Meadow Creek water rights transcriptions, complied by Harry J.B. Wilson; "McAllister Church History," by Mary Redfield Lindsey, 1952; and a photocopy of the Meadow Creek (McAllister) Methodist Church record book, 1869-1944.

Clarence L. Oliver Reminiscences

Summary:The Clarence L. Oliver Reminiscences contains several handwritten reminiscences from and a poem about his childhood and early life in the Ennis and McAllister areas of Madison County. Most of Oliver's writings concerned neighbors and acquaintances who lived in the area. The collection consists of Oliver's essays and are supplemented with two newspaper clippings, an interview and published letter by Oliver concerning his work with Cody and an incident involving Martha Jane Canary ("Calamity Jane").

Minnie Paugh Oral History Collection

Summary:The interviews represented in this collection are an eclectic mix of Montana citizens sought out by Paugh in her attempts to document the state's history. Never a trained interviewer, and a recording technician of limited competence at best, Paugh's interviews are uneven and represented by complete transcriptions, partial transcriptions, summary notes, and sometimes only by the tape itself. Montana places mentioned include: Fergus County, Gallatin County, Madison County, Powder River County, Bercail, Bozeman, Broadus, Browning, Butte, Fort Custer, Judith Gap, Lewistown, Two Dot, and Wisdom. Subjects include sheep and cattle ranching, homesteading, electric power generation, education, Battle of the Big Hole, the Yellowstone Expedition of 1869, Sisika Indians, Chippewa Cree Indians, and commerce.

Spray Collection consists of Spray's manuscript "Early Days in the Madison Valley," letters Spray wrote to Burlingame about the manuscript and plans for publication, a photograph of Spray taken in 1951.
