Haynes Family Photographs

Summary:The Haynes Family Photographs are comprised of photographs taken by F. Jay Haynes (FJH), Jack Ellis Haynes (JEH), and others during the period 1866-1969. The photographs are portraits, candid snapshots, Haynes Inc. (HInc), Haynes Picture Shops (HPS), and Haynes Studios Inc. (HSInc) photographs, and other images covering a very diverse subject matter. The vast majority of the photographs are concerned with friends and family of the of the Haynes (FJH and JEH) and Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Additionally, there are also "Cabinet and Boudoir" photographs taken by FJH as the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR) and many photographs, numbered and unnumbered, in Haynes family photo albums. Additional images include artwork prepared for Haynes brochures, artwork by illustrator Fritz Schlanze, photos of paintings by W.H. Jackson, an extensive collection of reproductions of paintings by C.M. Russell sold by HInc and HPS in YNP, and other artwork and photographs related to the area surrounding YNP and the West in general.

Summary:The Northern Pacific Railway Company was a transcontinental railroad that crossed Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. This collection includes both bound and unbound correspondence, construction and expense reports, financial ledgers, right-of-way descriptions and maps, activity logs, publicity materials (including photographs and film reels), and personnel records created by employees of the Northern Pacific Railway Company and its subsidiary lines between the years 1870 and 1968--though materials are predominantly from the late 1880s through the early 1940s.

Summary:Hazard Stevens was born in Rhode Island in 1842 and educated in New England. His father, Major General Isaac I. Stevens was governor of the Washington Territory. Hazard served in the Indian war from 1855-1856 and later in the Civil War. Thereafter, he moved to Washington territory where he worked for the Oregon Steam Navigation Company, then as Internal Revenue collector form the Territory and eventually became a lawyer and worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Stevens, along with P. B. Van Trump, climbed what would later be named Mt. Rainier in the first recorded ascent to the summit. By the 1880s Stevens returned to the east coast, building a home in Dorchester Massachusetts. He became active in regional politics, including an unsuccessful run for congress. This collection contains correspondence, documents, diaries and ephemera related to Stevens life, professional pursuits and business matters. It also contains considerable information dealing with the life of his father and the history of his family, reaching back to the 19th century.
