Lewis and Clark National Forest Passport in Time oral history project

Summary:The Passport in Time interviews were part of a heritage research project of the region done by United States Forest Service employees and regional volunteers. The fifteen interviewees, recorded for the Lewis and Clark National Forest Passport in Time Oral History Project by staff and volunteers in 1997, describe growing up on Montana ranches, sheepranching, grazing in national forests the Crazy Mountains, and other areas and towns in or near the National Forest from about 1930 to 1950.

Montana Homesteading Project records

Summary:The Montana Homesteading project was initiated by the Montana Historical Society in cooperation with the Homestead National Monument of America in 2004 as a means to document family stories relating to homesteading experiences in Montana. The project focused on living descendants of homesteaders in Montana in an effort to gather written stories and/or names for potential oral history interviewees—23 interviews were conducted for this project. The historical information submission form, arranged alphabetically by family name, contains background information on families who homesteaded in Montana, primarily between 1909-1930. Some files contain additional information including reminiscences, photographs, and official homesteading documentation.

Evelyn Rhoden Works Progress Administration Papers

Summary:This collection consists of Evelyn Rhoden’s notes about the history of Musselshell, Golden Valley, and Meagher Counties in central Montana. The notes, which are especially rich in the ranching history, were gathered when Rhoden was employed by the Federal Writer’s Project of the Works Project Administration during the late 1930s and early 1940s.
