Summary:The Alfred E. Aiken Papers consist of eight original letters he wrote from 1885 to 1890 to his sister, Sabra Jane "Jennie" Aiken who was living in Frewsburg, New York. The letters were sent from Poplar Creek and Dawson County, Montana, and Fort Buford, North Dakota, and describe his impressions of the country, the military garrison at Poplar Creek, members of the tribes on the nearby reservation, incidents of ranch life, and family news. The letters are supplemented by a biographical essay, "A Cowpuncher's Prairie Romance," written by Aiken's granddaughter, Evelyn J. Aiken Jones.

Summary:The Ash Family Papers consist of typed manuscripts created by Beth McElfresh and her sisters Joy and Jessie. They describe ranching experiences and life near Baker, Montana, along with memories of their father and mother, Frank and Mary Ash. Also included are a number of family photographs.

Henry O. Fortin Scrapbook

Summary:The Henry O. Fortin Scrapbook contains dance cards, theater programs, sporting event programs, ticket stubs, "spirit" ribbons, and objects such as a beanie, pocket handkerchiefs, and a hat cord, most collected by him while he was a student at Montana State College. Several pages of signatures and brief testimonial comments from fellow USGS workers from 1926 through 1930 are included. The scrapbook also contains a few letters, including one personally signed by then U.S. Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover and another by U.S. Congressman John M. Evans. A student essay based Fortin's personal experience growing up in rural Montana, "The Hunt," is pasted into the scrapbook.

Images in this collection were collected for publicity, construction and maintenance, and individual faculty and staff members. Also included in this collection are personal snapshots and photograph albums produced by individual students, faculty, and staff members.

Summary:The I. D. O'Donnell Papers include diaries, correspondence, business records, literary manuscripts, postcard albums, subject files, and photographs. Correspondence includes letters from Montana State College, the U. S. Department of Agriculture, U. S. Reclamation Service, U. S. House and Senate Committees on Beet Sugar Industry, Montana Irrigation and Drainage Institute, and the Secretary of the Interior, Franklin K. Lane. O'Donnell received letters from Montana political leaders such as Under Secretary of the Department of Agriculture M. L. Wilson, U. S. Senators Thomas J. Walsh and Henry L. Myers, U. S. Representative John M. Evans, and Governors J. E. Erickson and F. H. Cooney. Manuscripts include articles on agriculture, livestock, and farm management, and the column "Hints from the Practical Farmer" written for the Reclamation Record, as well as manuscripts O'Donnell collected for research on topics such as alfalfa, birds, irrigation, sugar beets, dairy cattle, soil, weeds, ranch management, and hogs. O'Donnell also collected material on topics such as Billings and Montana history, various irrigation projects in Montana, and agriculture. The collection also contains business records from the Minnesota and Montana Land and Improvement Company, the Frederick Billings estate, and the Hesper Farm. The collection also contains postcards and travel brochures from O'Donnell's various travels.

Rodney Wallace Page Family Papers

Summary:The Rodney W. Page Papers consist of letters and legal documents. Most of the letters were written in 1881-1882, correspondents include Rodney and his wife, Sarah, their son, Arthur, Rodney's daughter, Elvira, and her daughter Mary. These letters describe family news, local weather conditions, religious admonishments, the state of affairs in Montana, preparations for the family's move to the territory, as well as farming and ranching activities in Madison County. The legal documents discuss the sale and management of cattle.

M.L. Wilson Agricultural Photographs Collection

Summary:The Agriculture Photograph collection includes photographs, nitrate negatives, safety negatives, and glass plate negatives created by or collected by M.L. Wilson. Images in this collection pertain to agricultural subjects and projects studied 1901 to 1945 at Montana State College. Image subject include: alfalfa, barley, clover, corn, grain, grass, wheat, sunflowers, thistles, and vegetables. Other subjects include: demonstration and field days, experiment stations, farm machinery, farmsteads, dryland farming, tillage, harvesting, erosion, livestock, rural life in Montana, and pot tests. Of particular interest are numerous images of "big hitch" teams, horse-drawn implements using eight or more teams of draft animals for power.
