Olney Taylor Diary

Summary:The Olney Taylor Diary was kept Olney on his first trip to Montana in 1882. The diary begins with his departure from Waterville, Maine on March 20 and describes the train journey to Montana. On arrival in the Yellowstone Valley, Taylor recorded his purchase of land from a neighbor on April 25 and kept daily entries thereafter. Taylor's diary documents the building of his log home and outbuildings, the initial planting of his first orchards, mentions several other area settlers, offers a description of local weather conditions, and a very brief synopsis of his farming activities. Other papers in the collection include some newspaper clippings and an original poem written on Montana State Board of Horticulture stationery.

Summary:The Yellowstone Travel Diary details the vacation tour by railroad of a unknown woman and her husband to Glacier National Park through Chicago, North Dakota and Shelby Montana in 1932. Descriptions include hikes, glaciers, lakes and waterfalls, boat rides, Blackfeet performances, ranger lectures, hotel accommodations, Park Ranger information on the geysers and other lecture facts, the feeding of bears at the hotel dumps, feeding "tame" bears at the hotel, hikes at the waterfalls and the types of scenery on the roads emphasis on the special features, scenic views, the weather, housing, and meals. Locations include St. Mary's Lake, Going to the Sun Highway and Chalet, Josephine Lake, Grinell Glacier, Mt. Altyn, Many Glacier Hotel Mammoth Hot Springs, geyser fields, Old Faithful Lodge Mount Washburn, the Lower and Upper Falls of the Yellowstone at Canyon Lodge Pikes Peak, the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles and Hollywood homes and studios, Catalina Island, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, Crater Lake, Klamath Falls, Portland and Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Rainier, Seattle, the Butchart Gardens, Vancouver BC, the Fraser River Valley and Canyon, Yoho National Park and Lake Louise, and Banff National Park.
